Visual aftereffects

چکیده
interacting neuronal networks make adaptive behavioral decisions. Further new avenues opened up by recent work on Lymnaea may lead to an understanding of how learning and homeostatic processes interact, to the building of sophisticated computer models of functional connectivity and interacting networks, and even to the development of applications to artificial complex systems. At a different level, the discovery and structural analysis of a glia-derived acetylcholine-binding protein that modulates synaptic transmission between identified neurons of the Lymnaea respiratory CPG has provided important cues to the structural basis of ligand binding in nicotinic acethylcholine receptors in vertebrates. This pioneering work in Lymnaea opened the way for new research that might lead to the development of new drugs involving nicotinic acetylcholine receptorassociated diseases. A recently initiated pilot sequencing project is expected to result in a cDNA sequence database from the CNS, and in turn, will potentially lead to a full genomic sequencing project of Lymnaea stagnalis.

Dynamics of walking adaptation aftereffects induced in static images of walking actors
Visual adaptation to walking actions results in subsequent aftereffects that bias perception of static images of walkers in different postures so that they are interpreted as walking in the opposite direction to the adapting actor. It is not clear, however, if the walking aftereffect is comparable to other well studied low- and high-level visual aftereffects. We therefore measured the dynamics ...
متن کاملAdaptation in single units in visual cortex: the tuning of aftereffects in the temporal domain.
Adaptation-induced changes in the temporal-frequency tuning and direction selectivity of cat visual cortical cells were studied. Aftereffects were induced largely independent of direction. Adapting in either direction reduced responses in both directions. Aftereffects in the direction opposite that adapted were only slightly weaker than were aftereffects in the adapted direction. No cell showed...
متن کاملSimilar neural adaptation mechanisms underlying face gender and tilt aftereffects
Visual aftereffects have been found for a wide variety of stimuli, ranging from oriented lines to human faces, but previous results suggested that face aftereffects were qualitatively different from orientation (tilt) aftereffects. Using computational models, we predicted that these differences were due to the limited range of faces used in previous studies. Here we report psychophysical result...
متن کاملOptic Flow Induces Nonvisual Self-Motion Aftereffects
There is strong evidence of shared neurophysiological substrates for visual and vestibular processing that likely support our capacity for estimating our own movement through the environment. We examined behavioral consequences of these shared substrates in the form of crossmodal aftereffects. In particular, we examined whether sustained exposure to a visual self-motion stimulus (i.e., optic fl...
متن کاملMotion Aftereffects Transfer between Touch and Vision
Current views on multisensory motion integration assume separate substrates where visual motion perceptually dominates tactile motion [1, 2]. However, recent neuroimaging findings demonstrate strong activation of visual motion processing areas by tactile stimuli [3-6], implying a potentially bidirectional relationship. To test the relationship between visual and tactile motion processing, we ex...
متن کاملAdaptation in single units in visual cortex: the tuning of aftereffects in the spatial domain.
Cat striate cortical neurons were investigated using a new method of studying adaptation aftereffects. Stimuli were sinusoidal gratings of variable contrast, spatial frequency, and drift direction and rate. A series of alternating adapting and test trials was presented while recording from single units. Control trials were completely integrated with the adapted trials in these experiments. Ever...
